Slots aproved for sandown park

56 percent voted yes to give a clear win in a non-binding referendum on the installation of slot machines at Sandown.

The matter will now go before the North Saanich Council.

In a remarkable turnout, 47 percent of eligible elector cast ballots, with 56 percent (2102) voted in favour and 44 percent (1641) voted against.

“Obviously, we’re thrilled with the result,” said Sandown general manager Chuck Keeling.

“What we find especially gratifying is in winning so decisively and with such a large turnout. A lot of North Saanich residents worked hard to help us win, and I want to thank them.

“I also want to say that we respect the concerns of those who voted against our proposal. Our challenge now is to convince them that the redevelopment of Sandown Park benefits all the residents of North Saanich.”

Orangeville Raceway, the operator of Sandown Park, is proposing to completely redevelop Sandown Park.

Highlights of the proposal include investment of between $2 and $4 million, and the addition of electronic gaming machines at Sandown Park would generate an estimated $1 million, annually, for the District of North Saanich.

The Keeling name has been synonymous with horse racing in British Columbia for three generations.

Keeling said that he is particularly pleased the sport will now have the chance to again flourish at Sandown, and that the rural and agricultural nature of the community will be preserved.
